Having checked out of the Chelsea but still mentally kicking around New York, I was hoping to bring you Martina Kudláček’s outstanding 2006 documentary Notes on Marie Menken. However that’s not online, so instead here’s a film by the same director concerning someone who is no stranger to these pages: filmmaker Maya Deren.
Like the Marie Menken study, In the Mirror of Maya Deren (2002) has a great original score by John Zorn, and features the guru of non-narrative filmmaking, Jonas Mekas, along with Amos Vogel, who died just last month. Using film extracts, original interviews and audio recordings of her subject, Kudláček demonstrates the extent to which poetry, dance, ritual and filmmaking were indivisible elements of Deren’s art.
